Motorist in lower Jamestown experienced long tail backs yesterday afternoon when an abnormal load that was been transported from the wharf area to the Grand Parade was discovered to be too wide to pass through the Arch way entrance near the Grand Parade. The abnormal load which was a custom built component destined for the St James church steeple refurbishment project was been transported on AMD Engineering’s Renault truck when it came to a standstill at the Arch.
Traffic entering lower Jamestown and exiting the pier head were affected by the wide load that could not pass through the Arch. A quick solution was discussed and a plan was implemented to resolve the issue by using a Basil Read mobile crane to lift the component of the truck and then load it back onto truck on the opposite side. Much earlier in the day the Grove RT530E Rough Terrain Crane was mobilized from Ruperts and escorted into Jamestown. Cars were prevented from parking on the Stand in Jamestown to ensure that the Crane would have enough road width on which to travel in the narrow street.
